Portugal v Spain, USA v Belgium Round of 16 games, teams, players, standings

Now it’s time for more of that news I was talking about earlier.

If you’ve been following the World Cup, you will know by now about FIFA lifting the ban on US striker Florian Balogun.

Balogun, America’s stand-out forward with three goals, received a red card for stepping awkwardly on the right ankle of Tarik Muharemović of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 2-0 round-of-32 win. A red card is an automatic one-match ban, but the White House put in a call to FIFA and, surprise, the red card suspension has been overturned.

This, expectantly, has caused outrage, and despite Belgium’s best efforts (the United States’ opponent in the round of 16 later this morning), the decision has not been reversed. We await the team lists of that match to see whether Balogun will start for the United States, but at this point, it looks likely.
