BAYANG (tha Bushranger) & Kuya Neil, Phar Lap
Phar Lap is a seven-track collaboration between Bankstown rapper BAYANG (tha Bushranger) and producer Kuya Neil, developed over four years across studios in Sydney, Melbourne and Manila. That extended process gives the tape a sense of breadth and perspective: it isn’t a record of a single session or moment, but a document of ongoing experimentation and collaboration.
The music moves across multiple underground currents, fusing the grit of streetwise gutter rap with elements drawn from club music, punk-inspired guitar, and global rhythms. Rather than attempting to conform to one style, the duo allows the tape to exist as a living, shifting organism, where beats, samples, and vocals interact with a sense of deliberate unpredictability.
BAYANG’s vocal delivery anchors the record. His voice is raw, immediate and charismatic, balancing aggression with reflective cadence in a way that draws listeners into his world. Lyrically, he navigates themes of identity, heritage and urban experience, often infusing tracks with Filipino cultural references that highlight the diaspora’s influence on contemporary Australian music. It’s particularly evident on Luzon Bleeding Heart, where guest vocalist Sevy complements BAYANG’s verses with haunting melodic lines, creating a layered reflection on memory, place and community.
Kuya Neil’s production is a defining force on the mixtape. His approach blends traditional hip-hop rhythms with fractured electronic textures, worldly percussion and jagged punk guitar lines, creating a hybrid that feels immediate and forward-thinking. All seven tracks showcase Neil’s ability to balance complexity with clarity: layers of rhythm, samples and instrumentation interlock seamlessly, giving each track a sense of controlled chaos. His production style cultivates BAYANG’s gutter rap tone without diluting it, allowing the lyrics to command attention while the music constantly shifts beneath them, teasing unexpected textures and influences.
Beyond the duo, the tape benefits from contributions that expand its scope and reinforce its experimental spirit. Sevy’s vocals add emotional depth, while other collaborators – including rapper Lil JVibe on Forever and guitarist Josh Dowton on Free Jazz – provide subtle touches that enhance the tape’s palette without distracting from its core energy.
Phar Lap is a celebration of DIY creativity, where years of work, cross-city collaboration and shared artistic vision coalesce into a project that is adventurous and cohesive. The duo have crafted a sound that is distinctly Australian, while remaining unbound by geographic or stylistic limitations. It demonstrates how underground Australian hip-hop can embrace hybridity, risk-taking and cultural storytelling, while maintaining discipline and purpose.
