Robison became one of the biggest names in Christian television after launching his televangelism career in 1968.

Alongside his wife Betty, he fronted the long-running LIFE Today programme on Trinity Broadcasting Network from at least 1995.

Through LIFE Outreach International, Robison built a huge global audience, with his ministry claiming his preaching reached more than one billion people worldwide.

The Texas-born pastor, originally from Pasadena, also wrote several religious books and preached in more than 600 cities during his lifetime.

In 2015, he launched Christian news platform The Stream.

Tributes flooded social media after news of his death broke.

American commentator and comedian Chad Prather wrote: “I was absolutely heartbroken this morning to hear of the passing of my dear friend, evangelist James Robison. What an impact he made for the Kingdom in millions of lives.

“We celebrate his home-going today with tears of both sorrow and joy. He made an impact on my life that goes beyond words. Well done, servant of the Most High King!”

Another supporter posted: “Love James Robinson. Partnered in Life Today Ministry for years to build wells. He will be sorely missed. Praying for his wife Betty and their family. They had a beautiful Godly marriage.”

A third simply wrote: “Condolences to his family.”

Robison and his wife Betty had three children together and later welcomed 11 grandchildren.

The couple suffered tragedy in 2012 when one of their daughters died from throat cancer.

The ministry closed its statement with the Bible verse: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:21.
