Anthony Albanese speaks at National Press Club after address to the nation

Should Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have provided more substance to Australians during last night’s national address?

That was the question Defence Minister Richard Marles was asked on the ABC’s RN Breakfast a short while ago.

On the same radio program, Liberal frontbencher Dan Tehan remarked:

He might as well have told us what he was going to have for dinner … there was nothing new in [the speech]. I think everyone was just flabbergasted after last night.”

Here’s what Marles had to say:

Australians are understandably feeling anxious about what is going on. It’s in that context that the prime minister rightly wanted to speak directly to the Australian people about what they’re experiencing, what’s coming down the track, but, importantly, what the government is doing and what Australians themselves can do. And that’s what he explained last night.”

While on ABC TV, Marles said he wasn’t going to “speculate about the specifics, other than to point to the national fuel security plan” when pressed on whether the PM was just preparing the nation to expect tougher fuel-saving measures after Easter.
