Fire engulfs service station in Fairfield

A blaze that engulfed a petrol station in Sydney’s south-west and sent plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky has forced nearby residents to flee, with atmospheric testing under way to determine if it’s safe to return.

The fire has been contained but more than 50 firefighters will remain on the scene to fully extinguish it through the afternoon, NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector Steve Brown said.

The service station and surrounding buildings were evacuated as 13 fire trucks arrived on the scene, including HAZMAT crews.
