A question mark may still hang over actor Zendaya’s marital status to Spider-Man co-star Tom Holland, but on the red carpet, wedding bells are ringing loud and clear.
The 29-year-old has been busy promoting her latest project, The Drama (in cinemas today), an A24 production which follows a happy couple (played by Zendaya and Robert Pattinson) whose upcoming nuptials are derailed after the bride reveals a terrible secret.
In today’s world, promoting a film is as much about what its actors wear as what they say, with method dressing becoming a real trend (see Margot Robbie’s Barbie and “Wuthering Heights” press tours, or Zendaya’s tennis-themed looks for Challengers in 2024).
Zendaya is following a similar playbook, dressing to the traditional “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” adage.
For “something borrowed”, Zendaya wore a plunging black Armani Privé gown to the film’s Rome premiere, a piece first worn by Cate Blanchett to the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2022, and then again in 2025 to the Venice Film Festival.
The strategy was devised by longtime stylist Law Roach, the very same loose-lipped insider who was behind rumours of his client’s secret wedding in the first place.
Roach seemed to confirm the Armani dress was indeed taken straight from Blanchett’s wardrobe, writing “Thank you Cate Blanchett” on his Instagram stories.
Zendaya’s “something old” was a white, bridal-esque Vivienne Westwood gown she wore to her first Oscars as a fresh-faced 18-year-old, then largely known for her work as a Disney child actor.
But it was also an induction into what can be a racist industry, with then-E! News red carpet correspondent Giuliana Rancic commenting she looked like “she smells like patchouli oil and weed” (referring to Zendaya’s dreadlocks).
Zendaya called Rancic’s comments out on Instagram as “outrageously offensive” writing, “… my wearing my hair in locs on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of colour that our hair is good enough”.
Rancic later apologised, but Zendaya has since said the remarks have had a “lasting impact”.
Zendaya saved her “something blue” moment for an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, donning an Alexander McQueen floral gown, while her “something new” was a white dress with dramatic black bow, custom-made by Louis Vuitton, worn to The Drama’s Paris premiere.
While Zendaya and her representatives are keeping coy about whether she and Holland have said “I do”, eagle-eyed fans have spotted a gold wedding band worn alongside her five-carat engagement ring in recent appearances, as well as the veritable frosting of David Morris diamond jewellery she wore in Paris last week.
Beyond The Drama press tour, Zendaya and Law Roach seem keen on the whole borrowing thing.
Last month, she wore the iconic Cache mini worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the first Sex and the City movie. The floral dress itself was a mass-market copy of a Eugene Alexander piece first worn by Whitney Houston.
How meta.
