An armoured van transporting cash has been robbed at gunpoint north of Brisbane, with the thief taking a “significant quantity” of money before fleeing.
Police said the Armaguard vehicle was stopped at a Hervey Bay shopping centre about 6.30am on Tuesday when a man approached the van security officer.
Both men were armed.
A skirmish erupted between the pair at the Ibis Street shopping centre, and police said the security officer fired a shot, although no one was injured.
Officers said the thief then fled the scene in an orange Ford Ranger with a “significant quantity of cash”, but was stopped by police an hour later about 10 kilometres away on Craignish Road.
He was taken into custody, although officers had yet to lay charges.
Police set up crime scenes at the shopping centre and on Craignish Road where the Ford Ranger was intercepted by officers.
A police spokesperson said investigations were continuing on Tuesday morning, with the Maryborough criminal investigation branch poised to release details in the afternoon.
